Dinnertime

You would think that after a month of not writing anything, I would have loads of interesting things to tell. You are wrong.

My day to day life has now SO monotonous that the days have just blended to one another and I can't tell a Monday from a Friday.

Here's how a typical day goes - wake up-go to work-review patients-rounds with MO-rounds with specialist-do ward work-lunch-pm review-ward work-go back home-go for dinner-back home-bathe/go online/read story book-sleep.

This is a daily routine. The only spark of excitement in my life is dinner.

I now have permanent dinner mates, all of us housemen, which means that our topic of conversation is about the specialists, MOs, housemen and cases that we saw that day at work. And to imagine, that is the most exciting part of my day..

Here's the thing. In the morning, you go to work feeling neutral (not happy, not sad, not angry). But throughout the course of the day, things change.

Most of the days, things go wrong. In fact, I come back almost everyday, angry about something. Maybe it's just me (or maybe it's not). But I have to say, I am quite glad that I am getting out of this department soon (hopefully I don't get extended). It's not the work, it's just the people that I have to work with that I can't stand. What is the use of having 20 people to drive a car if no one is willing to offer to drive it or if they can't be bothered to properly learn how to drive it?

There were also days that I came back smiling. Days when it felt like nothing in the world can make me feel bad. However, such days were rare.

I am getting out of the topic though. All I'm trying to say is, good days or bad days, one needs to pour their heart out to someone, and who else better to talk to that those who know all the characters in the stories? Right?

So that's why our dinner topics are such a bore. In fact, it's not just our dinner topics. It's our all the time topic, whether we meet in the hospital or out of the hospital. It got so bad, till KR complained that that is the only thing we talk about and he is bored of it.

I guess I am lucky. I have people around me who actually care for me. Who buy for me dinner whenever I am oncall because the oncall food sucks. I have people who listen to me when I complain, who look at me and in one glance know that I am unhappy about something. I am lucky because I have managed to find myself a few true friends, who really care about me.

A year ago, I used to eat dinner alone everyday, with a storybook to keep me company. Nowadays, I hardly have time to read my storybook because I spend that time having dinner and talking stories. Maybe that is one of the reason of my inactivity here..Can't blame a girl if she's too busy talking to write, right?

She's Married!

A good friend of mine got married last weekend.
She was my group-mate from Russia, and I had been planning to go for her wedding ever since I heard about it.

There are a few reasons I wanted to go for the wedding.
1. She is my friend, and she is getting married (duh!)
2. I had leave that I could spare.
3. I knew that if I went for the wedding, I would be meeting my other friends as well.

And I did all 3!

Not all of my friends were there, some were tagging and some couldn't take leave. But I had friends who came all the way from JB and Kedah for the wedding!

I think all of us had a good time just chatting and catching up. We were one of the few who sat at the table even after finishing eating.

I didn't realize up to then how comfortable I felt with these people, friends I 'acquired' in Russia.

They are people I had lived with for 6 years.
They have seen me in my pajamas (which is basically what I wear in my room whether sleeping or not).
They probably have seen me asleep.
They have seen me sick.
(Of course they have seen me awake and healthy as well)

We have gone for classes together.
Gone for picnics together.
Made fun of lecturers together.
Celebrated birthdays together.
Cooked and eaten together.
We have even ponteng classes together!

These were the people I saw everyday, day in, day out for 10 months in a year.
We may not have been the closest of friends, but we were more than just friends. Something more or less like family.

And now, we work in different hospitals in Malaysia.
It's been more than a year since I've seen them.
And yet, I still feel close to them.
Still feel that I can talk to them freely.
I don't know how to explain how I felt that day, how I feel today.
I miss them, that much I know.

A Friend In Need..

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.

'What food might this contain?'
The mouse wondered -he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning.

'There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!'

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, 'Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.'

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, 'There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!'

The pig sympathized, but said, 'I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.'

The mouse turned to the cow and said, 'There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!'

The cow said, 'Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose.'

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap-- alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house --like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.
In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer's wife.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued,so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock.

To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died.
So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life.
We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

THIS IS TO LET YOU ALL KNOW HOW IMPORTANT YOU ALL ARE.
REMEMBER: EACH OF US IS A VITAL THREAD IN ANOTHER PERSON'S TAPESTRY; OUR LIVES ARE WOVEN TOGETHER FOR A REASON.

One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a friend.

Dim Sum

Some years ago, YG promised me this - 'come to Ipoh, and I will take you to the best Dim Sum place'.

I have now been Ipoh for more than 9 months.

Finally, today, the promise has been kept.
(I don't blame her, though..all of us have been busy in our separate departments).

In fact, today, is the first time that us 4 girls from MMA in Ipoh Hospital went out for makan together!

It's my first time eating Dim Sum.
I really did enjoy it.
There were a variety of things to eat.
The food was tasty.
The pau was exceptionally delicious!
Service was good.
And it wasn't as expensive as I expected it to be.

Besides eating, we had a good time chatting and gossiping.
We stayed on even after everyone else had left.
We were the only ones sitting upstairs, with only 1 fan on.
At one point, they came and told us that the cashier was about to close and asked us to pay first (we could still sit and chat though)

I wish we have more days like this.

round 2..(forgot to take picture of round 1)
See the pau - really worth a try (if you are a pork-eater)

YG and I
People were already starting to leave, as you can see from the empty tables behind us.
Apparently, Dim Sum is eaten for breakfast (we only went there about 11.30am)

LY and CL
The decorations in the shop were really nice...if I ever go back there again (and I hope I will), I'll make sure that I take more picture of the shop to post up.

Love Is Blind, Or Is It Not?

Today, my room-mate and I had a short discussion - is love blind?

She says yes, I say no.

Why do I say so?

'Cos I think that people fall in love only when they want to.
If you don't want to fall in love with someone, then you won't.

Which is why I don't believe crap like - I can't help but fall in love with that person.

Why is it that the person that you can't seem to be able to resist is always someone who is good looking or is rich or is successful or is someone of influence?
Why is it so rare that someone falls for someone who is of so-called-lower social ranking?

I honestly think that you have a big part to play in deciding who you fall in love with.
If you want to love someone, then you will.
If you befriend someone without the intention of falling in love, then you won't.

If you equate love with being close to someone, then I guess you won't have that many close friends, just many ex-boyfriends/girlfriends.

I don't know if I am making sense.
Sounds like crap to me.
I know what I am thinking, but am having difficulty putting it in words for now.
Feel tired for some reason - precall syndrome?

For now, I will leave this topic by itself.
Maybe some other day when my brain decides that it can function a little bit better, I will tackle this topic again.

What do you think, by the way?
Is love blind?
Please participate in my poll - thank you!

Friends

It's been a week full of drama and gossip here in our Ortho department.
But I am not going to talk about that here.
It's an interesting story, but it is not sharable (does such a word exist?) on the net.

The past two days, I have been hanging out with my friends quite a lot. Just having lunch and chatting. It's nice to just lepak like that.

I do know, however, that I will never be close to them as I was with my friends in Russia.

In Moscow, we go to classes together, we come back together, we go shopping together, we go out makan together, we stay together.
We don't really have any other choice.
We don't have a home to go back to during weekends.
We don't have anyone else to turn to when we are in need of help.
It is hard NOT to get close.
Basically, we know almost everything about each other.

My friends (the ones I was really close to), know exactly what I like to eat and what I don't eat.
They even know what kind of dresses/tops I would like.
They know about my family and extended family.
They know all my bad habits (and frequently scold me when I do them).

We have talked for many hours, sometimes late into the night (or early into the morning).
We have watched countless movies together.
We have fallen asleep together - 5 people on 2 single beds.
We have shared cups and plates and swapped clothes.
We have shared secrets and many, many stories.

I miss them.
And I know they miss me too ('cos I know them damn well).
:P

Recently, I learnt that when a SSG (split skin graft) is done, slits are made on the 'donor-skin' for 2 reasons :
1 - so that whatever fluid (blood or serous fluid) doesn't get collected beneath the skin and will be able to seep out.
2 - so that the skin can be stretched

Woman!

I've received a couple of interesting mails recently.

This mail was titled - If woman controlled the world:

The second mail was just a short one, a quote:

Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater.
If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby.
If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal.
If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart.
She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.
So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a tonne of shit!

Today, I learnt that everyone needs friends. Friends to talk to, friends to go out with, friends to complain to. Without friends, life would be miserable (at least for me). I am glad I have friends around me. P/S - I miss my old friends!!

Friends Or Colleagues?

Yesterday, I had my first OT (operation theater) call.
It was quite a sudden thing - I replaced a friend of mine who took emergency leave.

It was quite interesting to note that the equipments used in an Ortho OT is similar to tools you find in a toolbox.
We have hammers, drills, screws, screw-driver-like-thingy, rods and pliers.

I don't have much to say about the OT itself.
It is cold.
Basically, as housemen, we just assist the MO or surgeon during the surgery.
Time passes by quite fast though, which is a good thing.

I was just thinking - I have quite many colleagues, but how many of those can I consider my friends?
Are all my colleagues my friends?
What is the definition of a friend anyway?
So, I do what I do best - I googled for the answer.

I found 2 definitions for a friend :
1. A person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.
2. A person whom one knows; an acquaintance.

Personally, I prefer the first definition - however, it is not easy to find someone that you can trust 100%. You can't just go spill your guts to every Tom, Dick and Harry, right?
But then the second definition is too common. What if you know the person but you don't like the person - is that person still considered a friend?

A colleague - A fellow member of a profession, staff, or academic faculty; an associate.

If I were to accept the second definition of a friend, then all colleagues are to be considered friends. However, if I agree with the first definition, then I can separate my colleagues into 2 groups - those whom I introduce as my friends (I like them) and those I introduce as my colleague (don't really like them).

Now, I think the first definition makes more sense than the second.

So, if I were to introduce someone as a colleague - paham-pahamla that I don't really like them. :P

I think I am crapping already. Must be the lack of sleep. Time to stop for today.

Today, I learnt that people will say/do anything to save their asses. Do your own work. Don't trust another person to do things for you. If something goes wrong, you are the one who will be blamed.

10 Reasons Why I Miss Moscow

1. I miss having friends whom I can meet at any time of the day. I miss the long talks, the gossiping sessions, the laughing at stupid jokes times, the movie-watching times and just going visiting to another room when I am bored.

2. The wonderful public transport system. I am not even going to bother comparing it to the public transport system in Malaysia which is almost non-existent and unreliable.

3. Freedom. I got to decide where to go and what to do.

4. I miss the times when everyone in the hostel would be awake at 4am and asleep at 11am.

5. I miss the eating-togethers we used to have.

6. I miss the mahjong games, the karaoke competitions, the outings, the sport's days, the parties and barbeques we've had and late-night birthday celebrations.

7. I miss watching a movie on the laptop with a bunch of people and eventually falling asleep even though the movie is not even halfway through.

8. I miss the freezing cold water when I wash my face in the mornings.

9. I miss planning for a trip, deciding where to go, and feeling the excitement of going for a vacation or going back home for holidays.

10. I miss my Cheetos and Alpen Gold and the juices!!!!
