A Post From Barcelona

Oh my..it´s been really, really long since my last post. The internet in my hostel has been down for like forever and besides, I have been super busy.

My parents arrived in Moscow on the 23rd of June in time for my graduation on the 24th and on the 25th I was busy running between the Kremlin and my dean´s office trying to take my parents sight-seeing and settling some certificate stuff at the same time. That night, we took the train to St. Petersburg and after 2 days in Petersburg, we left to Barcelona.

I am in Barcelona right now. The keyboard is a bit weird and I am typing with a little difficulty. The EURO Cup finals is going on and I bet almost everyone in Spain is glued to the TV. I have been offered unlimited use of the internet because the guy who controls the internet doesn´t want to be disturbed during the game. But then, I am tired and hot and sleepy and in need of a bath and don´t really feel like spending that much time online.

There is SO many things that have taken place that I would like to blog about, but I am not in the mood to do so. There are SO many pictured that I would like to upload, but am unable to right now. So, I have decided that I am going to end this post and do my ´blogging´when I am back home, in Moscow or Malaysia.

That reminds me....I WILL BE BACK HOME ON THE 12TH OF JULY (wanted to type exclamation marks, but don´t know how to do it on this computer)

Well, I guess that´s all I have to say for now. Byeeeee

Zona club

I know, I know..I promised to write about the Zona Club a few days back, but time seems to be passing by SO fast, I just can't find the time to make an entry. It's not like I've been that busy, but then I've had quite a number of things to think about and I couldn't find the 'motivation' I needed to make an entry. Yesterday my brother criticized me for not updating my blog, so I thought that it is time for me to do so.

Anyway, Zona club. It wasn't as crowded or smoky as what I imagined it would be. But noisy it was. Quite a number of my friends were there; in fact, we were the majority, at least at the 1st and 2nd floor (the club has 5 floors). It was quite fun, just sitting around and chatting, and dancing with friends. Everyone was surprised with our (Puspha's and mine) new hairstyle, and we had to answer the question "how are you going to bathe?" many, many times.

We were at the club till about 6am - the sun was already out and all the girls had foot pain after a long night in heels. Since we were hungry, we decided to go to McDonalds for breakfast. We ended up waiting outside of McD's since it opens only at 7.00am. It was the first time we were that desperate for McD. And guess what, we were the first customers there! What an accomplishment..haha

After Mc-breakfast, we headed back home, and reached the hostel at about 8.30am and slept at about 11am, after making my 'Corn-rows' entry.

I know this is a too-short entry, but I am rather in a rush to go out. See, I told you I am busy. There are many things that took place the last few days. I really hope I will manage to find the time to post them up. Gotta go now!

*if you would like to read more about Zona club, have a look at Gorgeous Ol' Eve's entry.

Corn-rows

For quite a few years now, I have thought of having my hair done in corn-rows (I never really knew what it was called until a few days ago). I just want to try it out at least once in my life. However, I never came around to doing it because I didn’t really know where I could get it done. Then, a few months ago, I spotted some of my juniors with their hair done up. After much questioning and decision making, finally, today, Puspha and I did our hairs.

We actually wanted to do it earlier this week, but the lady (who does the corn-rows) is only free during the weekends which is why we had to do it yesterday. Coincidently, the post-GOS-exam party is on the same day, so it seemed like we did our hair especially for the party. We chose to do only half the head instead of full, and did not use any extensions. The result - not bad..I think.

*actually, I just got back from the party. It is 9.40 am now. I have not had my night sleep yet ‘cos I am not really that sleepy, but maybe in a while I will be. I am not going to write about the party now, maybe later today or tomorrow. For now, just take a look at my new hair do…

Puspha did her's 1st

then it was my turn!

It's Party Time!

It's been only 3 days since my final exam. It feels like it has been a long, long time. Although the day immediately after the exam was kind of boring, yesterday and today wasn't too bad. It's 'cos I've had quite a few things to keep me occupied.

Gorgeous Ol' Eve is organizing a post-GOS-exam party (GOS exam = final exam) in Zona Club tomorrow and I'm going! It's the first time I'm going clubbing actually, and I don't know what to expect. I imagine that it will be dark and smoky and noisy and crowded. I will definitely write a post about it on Sunday or Monday, depending on how tired I am. The party is supposed to be from 10pm tomorrow till 6am Sunday morning. I have never in my life been out at such inhuman hours before. I can't wait!!

Also, Puspha and I are planning to do something tomorrow morning, I am not going to tell what for now, but then hopefully it turns out well because I think this is the only chance for me to try out something like this. Although excited about it, I am also quite nervous because I have no idea what it is going to turn out like. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Another thing to keep my day full..Quek came up with a marvellous idea of making ourselves (the 6th year English medium) an e-book containing our personal information and loads of photos. Since time is not really on our side as we have to complete it before the 24th, everyone is kind of rushing to collect and compile all the photos and information that we need. I don't really have that much of a job to do - all I am supposed to do is collect whatever is needed from my group members and pass it on to the editors. However, going through old photographs and answering the questionnaire that was prepared took up quite some time too; time that was spent mostly smiling and laughing over things that happened during our stay here.

Besides that, yesterday we had a small party in the hostel. It was supposed to be a picnic in Tsarysino Park, but it had to be converted to an indoor makan session since the weather decided not to cooperate with us. As usual, it was a potluck party. The 6 of us (Von Yen, Fen Fang, Swee Hung, Puspha, Yee Gin and I) prepare garlic bread and mushroom soup since it was more of a tea party. We had it on the 2nd floor corridor. This was the first time papers and mats were spread on the floor and we had our food sitting down. As usual, we gathered up, we ate, we talked a bit and then we went back to our rooms.

Come to think of it, a party in Russia is very different from one in Malaysia. The Zona Club party is a once in a blue moon kind of party; usually, this is what happens in Russia:
1. Decide to have a party, ask whether the others agree to it.
2. Decide who is going to cook what.
3. Everyone cooks.
4. Everyone gather up.
5. Everyone eat.
6. Everyone clean up.
7. Everyone go back to their rooms.

I imagine that in Malaysia, the scenario will slightly differ:
1. Decide to have a party.
2. Invite friends/family
3. Call caterers and arrange a menu
4. Have party, eat, drink, have fun.
5. Guest goes home. Host cleans up or has someone to clean up the mess.

I am not saying that one of the above situation is better than the other, but then it just goes on to show how different life is here and in Malaysia. I have posted here photos of parties/makan-sessions that we've had. I have only uploaded a few photos, but just look at the variety of food that we've had!

What Is Marriage All About?

I've got this a number of times in my mail, but everytime I read it, I can't help buy smile. Hope you enjoy it too!

MARRIAGE QUOTES BY KIDS!!!

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY? (written by kids)
You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.
-- Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with.
-- Kristen, age 10

WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.
-- Camille, age 10

HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.
-- Derrick, age 8

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?
Both don't want any more kids.
-- Lori, age 8

WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.
-- Lynn , age 8 (isn't she a treasure)

On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.

-- Martin, age 10

WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?
When they're rich.
-- Pam, age 7

The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that.
- - Curt, age 7

The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do.
-- Howard, age 8

IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. -- Anita, age 9 (bless you child)

HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED?
There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there?
-- Kelvin, age 8

And the #1 Favourite is........

HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?
Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a dump truck.
-- Rick, age 10

A Birthday Celebration

I have not been feeling too well for the past couple of days. It's not the sleep-the-whole-day and cannot-wake-up kind of sick, it's just that I feel groggy and lazy and irritated with the cold that has been bothering me. My brain doesn't seem to be functioning too well either. I feel sooo lazy to do anything, that I didn't even cook yesterday although I had all the time in the world.

Yesterday was a super-boring (as Fik would put it) day. I couldn't sleep in as I usually would on a holiday because I slept too long the afternoon before. And of course, when you wake up early, the day just never seems to end.

As usual, my day started with breakfast and MobWar. I chatted (is it a correct word?) with my brother for a while until he ditched me to have his lunch. Fen Fang suddenly decided to start clearing up and packing up her stuff, and I thought I would do the same. I went through the books and stuff on my bookshelf and table and then decided that maybe clearing up one part of the room on a day would be enough, at least I will have something to keep me occupied in days to come. Fen Fang however, cleared up all her stuff and is ready to go back at a moments notice.

halfway clearing up my bookshelf

once the job was done (all the boxes on my table are to be brought back home)

To think back, I don't even remember what I did after that. I was on Skype for a while, then I had a short nap, and then suddenly, it was already night.

At 10pm, we went for a classic Kahovs style birthday party. When one says 'birthday party' here in Kahovs, here is what takes place.

1. The roomate/groupmate of the birthday boy/girl buys or bakes a cake (baked cake is always more in demand)

2. Spreading the word - telling everyone that it is so and so's birthday and the celebration is at so and so time (usually midnight).

3. At the stipulated time, everyone gathers at the corridor and try their best not to make too much noise (so as to make the celebration a surprise), but the effort always fails.

4. Candles are lit, everyone goes to the birthday boy/girl's room and sings 'Happy Birthday' at the top of their lungs. The song is usually an extended version, everyone singing asynchronously, starting from the beginning over and over again. The singing may take up to a minute or so.

5. Cake is cut. Chips and drinks are passed around. Everyone talks with everyone, hence creating a marketplace atmosphere. Nobody bothers the birthday boy/girl while he/she cuts the cake.

6. The cake is passed around. (usually 2 cakes are needed to be sufficient for everyone)

7. If someone else comes to wish the birthday boy/girl, the song may be sung again.

8. Once everyone has had enough chips and drinks and cake, we go back to our respective rooms and carry on with whatever we were doing before that.

It is always fun to go for another person's birthday, but I don't really enjoy it when it is mine. I just don't like to be the centre of attention. However, such celebrations are a must because people expect it to be so. I too, am guilty of such expectations when it is someone-else's birthday.

You know what I am going to miss most about such birthdays? The fact that never again in my life, will I be able to go for a party where everyone will be wearing their house clothes (dirty/torn t-shirts, shorts, track suits, sarongs) and sometimes even their pajamas.

Finals Are Over!!

It's been a really long time since I blogged about anything; at least it feels like a really long time. I was kind of busy with my finals - trying to cram in whatever I can in between MobWar fights. I guess I have to retract what I said in my previous post - looks like Facebook can still be a little bit interesting.

Anyway, now my exams are over- thankfully we all passed. Hooray!! Now we have officially left our student life behind and are about to head to our working life. We were discussing about our current status over lunch today (after the exam) and suddenly it hit us - we are not studying, we are not working. Currently, we do not have a function in society and all we do is waste time and eat; in short, we are just using up the resources of the world. When you think of it, we are no more than 'sampah masyarakat'. Sad, but true - at least for the next couple of months. I don't think we are going to let that bother us though, we are going to enjoy the next few months as much as possible because the future seems quite bleak (especially when you think of all the oncalls and sleepless nights).

Right now, there are quite a number of things to look forward to.
-At least 1 bbq, 1 picnic, 1 post-GOS-exam party invitation. God knows how many get-togethers or makan-togethers we will be having among ourselves.
-My parents will be here on the 23rd. I have to plan where to take them to, what to cook for them and settle their accommodation stuff before that.
-I have to start looking through my stuffs and decide how to bring them all back home.
-There are many places in Moscow that I haven't visited yet, hope to do be able to do so in the next 2 weeks.
-Write more in my blog
-Earn more money in MobWar

I have to stop now, have to take my bath and stuff. Till later!!

Have More Children, Decrease Risk of Endometriosis

Last night, or more appropriately, early this morning, Joanna mentioned an interesting thing her gynae lecturer told in class. We were talking about endometriosis, a disease where uterine tissue (tissues of the uterus) can be found in other parts of the body besides the uterus.

*I don't want to start each of my sentence with 'according to her', so I am just going to omit that, but whatever I am going to say is what Joanna's teacher told.

(According to her) This is a new disease, as in one that has become more prevalent of late. It is because, previously, people did not use contraceptives and tend to get pregnant more often. This means, after puberty, a girl/lady menstruates for a few years, gets married and then goes through a cycle of pregnant-deliver-rest few months-pregnant. This is what the life cycle of the female gender is supposed to be like (I oppose this statement, but, as I said, this is what the teacher said).

Nowadays, ladies do not want to have that many children, and so use contraceptives and as a result, they menstruate more than the ladies of olden times. One of the proposed theory of how endometriosis develops is that, during menstruation, some amount of tissue flows in the opposite direction, which means they flow from the uterus into the Fallopian tubes and exit into the pelvic/abdominal cavity. The tissues then get implanted there and eventually cause problems.

What's the conclusion from this? Ladies should have more kids to prevent endometriosis (which is quite a serious disease, actually). But then, there's a catch. Another disease, adenomyosis, which is the penetration of the superficial layer of the uterus into deeper layers, is mostly found in multiparous women. Adenomyosis is equally as serious a disease as endometriosis.

I guess the conclusion is a little bit changed right now. You have a choice. You can have more children and decrease the risk of endometriosis or have less children and decrease the risk of adenomyosis.

Looks like in the end, this whole post doesn't really have a point, but I just thought it was an interesting piece of information.

In case you are interested to know about these 2 diseases, here are the Wiki links:

Studying Or MobWar-ing?

If I were to reply someones mail or messages today, this is how it would begin..
"Hi there. How are you? Sorry for the late reply, my exams are on the 6th and 9th of June, and I've been busy MobWar-ing and TextTwirl-ing in Facebook".

Doens't make much sense, does it? But that is what it is like here in Kahovs. Everyone is (deep, down inside) worried about the exams, but then with just a few days to go, how much can one study? 4 subjects and millions of disease, would we be able to study it in 1 week or 1 month of even 1 year? I know I can't.

Now I understand why (Dr.) Cheng (senior) was so relaxed last year when all of us who were in the 5th year were busy mugging for our exams. I know how our juniors must be feeling right now, seeing us watching movies and eating together and going out almost everyday when they are losing sleep studying for their exams.

I am trying to study, from Wikipedia. Wikipedia is my best friend - it helped me during my SPA interview and I am hoping it will help me for my finals. It is impossible to study from eMedicine - one disease will need a few stressful hours!

As I said, I am trying to study. I am trying to study in between my MobWar fights, while my 'health' is trying to recover. For those of you who have never heard of MobWar - it is a game where you form a mob and fight with other mobs and earn money through completing jobs (robbery, drug dealing etc.) and progress to another level. Truthfully, I don't know what is interesting about it, but hey, anything can be interesting if you compare it with studying, right?

My MCQs are on Friday (yikes!) and the oral paper is on Monday (argh!!). I really hope I can get through the exams. I am worried, but I don't know what kind of preparation to do anymore. All I am depending on is luck. I am hoping for easy questions and nice examiners. I am praying that I can diagnose whatever case that I am going to get and will get good marks. Wish me luck guys (and gals)!!

My invitation letter problem..I called Olga twice yesterday - the first time she couldn't hear me and the 2nd time she told me that the letter will be ready by today. But a few hours later she called me, yes, she called, and told that unfortunately the letter will be ready only on Thursday. I think that was nice of her, to call me. I'll call her again tomorrow, and hopefully, the letter will be ready by then.

See How We've Changed

As promised in one of my previous posts, here are my groups photos from the 1st year until the 6th year (arranged accordingly). Originally there were only 10 of us in the group, but Yee Gin joined our group from the 4th year onwards. Nothing much to say here, the photos say it all....
